The laptop begins to work slowly and becomes so hot when playing games, and its case is so hot that you can cook scrambled eggs. The reason is obvious – it overheats. But do not rush to buy a new laptop. You can still fix everything about what caused such intense heating and how to cool the device.

In this guide, I will tell you how to fix laptop overheating when playing games.

Why does overheating occur?

The main reasons for turning a laptop into an oven include the following:

  • Dust – gets inside the case through the holes for cooling the device, settles, and accumulates on the coolers, making it difficult for them to work. At the same time, neighboring components also heat up, which is why uncomfortable conditions are created for the entire system. The holes themselves, the grates, can also be clogged, then warm air can escape, and cold air; there is simply nowhere to go.
  • If the fans are broken – the laptop can get very hot. It is impossible to pull with this problem; otherwise, there is a chance that the components will burn out.
  • Dry thermal paste – the material that is applied to the processor affects the thermal conductivity.
  • Heavy loads on the laptop – trying to get the most out of a mid-range laptop in games in pursuit of ultra graphics presets, getting infected with viruses when downloading software or other content from dubious sources. The laptop can also heat up due to Miner viruses that are hidden in the application and devour the laptop’s resources when it is running.
  • A poorly ventilated room, especially in summer, leads to overheating.

What to do with all this? First, you need to identify why the laptop still heats up.

Signs of overheating

You can determine that the temperature reaches critical values by the following symptoms:

  • Too hot air is blown out from the inside; it is uncomfortable to hold your hand near the vent.
  • The device freezes or lags during operation, automatically turns off and does not want to turn on.
  • Jerks while playing video or audio, friezes while playing video games.
  • Some ports fail – USB, LAN, HDMI.
  • The fan is too noisy.

These “glitches” happen to prevent your laptop from crashing. You have to cool your laptop from heat so that it works properly. Manufacturers have implemented a throttling mechanism – when overheated, to reduce the load, the processor skips cycles to cool down during operation.

The consequences of overheating on a laptop

If you do not cool the laptop, then the consequences of overheating the processor can be fatal. When heated above 90 degrees, irreversible changes occur in the silicon crystal, fraught with processor failure. The normal operating temperature is from 65 to 85 degrees. It has been noticed that traditionally AMD processors heat up more than Intel ones. It is due to the peculiarities of their architecture.

Overheating is also dangerous for the hard drive. Under the influence of high temperatures, the parts of this product expand. If it heats up too much, then the aluminum magnetic disk, where all the data is written, can jam on the spindle on which it rotates. The normal operating temperature of a hard drive is no more than 50 degrees.

Ways to fix laptop overheating when playing games

Here are some quick tips for managing to overheat while playing games.

Removing unnecessary programs as a way to reduce the load on the processor

All running programs and services, even in idle mode, take the processing power of the processor. If there are a lot of them, then the load increases very significantly. I recommend you uninstall applications that you do not use. And thereby reducing the load and, accordingly, the heating of the CPU. You can do this through the Control Panel, the item “Programs.”

If the program is needed, but you rarely use it, it is enough to remove it from the startup list. To do this, press the key combination Win + R and enter the command msconfig.exe. In the “Startup” tab, uncheck the boxes next to unnecessary programs and click “Apply.” The next time you turn on your laptop, these applications will not automatically start.

Reducing the processor voltage

With a decrease in the supplied voltage, the computing power drops. However, this component also heats up less. To do this, just go to the control panel in the “Power Management” section and select the power-saving mode. In this case, the minimum voltage will be applied to the processor, including when powered from the mains, it will reduce its heating.

You can also do this in the BIOS. To do this, after turning on the laptop, press the F2, Del, or Esc buttons. The required section contains the word CPU in the title. Depending on the BIOS model, you can lower the voltage or reduce the multiplier, thereby supplying less voltage.

Dust removal and thermal paste replacement

To prevent overheating the laptop when playing games, cleaning from dust should be carried out regularly – at least once every six months. Although a laptop is not as powerful a dust collector as a desktop computer, household dust still gets into it. For cleaning, you can use a regular hair dryer or vacuum cleaner.

cpu-dust

Thermal paste should be replaced at least once a year. As in the previous case, you need to disassemble the laptop. But in addition, dismantle the cooler along with the radiator. The old thermal paste, even if it still looks normal, must be removed without residue. Similarly, you need to change the thermal paste on the video card by removing the cooler and lubricating the graphics chip with a new composition.

Using laptop cooling pads

To cool the laptop when playing games, more radical tricks are required. In this case, more resources are consumed, so the device heats up more. Often the above methods to avoid laptop overheating are not enough.

cooling-pad

What do you need to do so that the laptop does not overheat? Improve air circulation. It is not always possible to install a more powerful cooler since the free space inside the laptop case is very limited.

Cooling by software

You can also cool a laptop at home using special utilities to make the cooler rotate faster. SpeedFan or MSI Afterburner programs are suitable for this. The programs are designed for overclocking the video card, but they can also cool the laptop by increasing the fan speed on the CPU.

As you can see, understanding the causes of laptop heating and eliminating them is not such a difficult task. The main thing is to do everything in time so that overheating does not have time to damage the components.

Any PC or laptop has a specific and limited storage capacity that obviously depends on the data or software that you have installed. There is no doubt that it plays a very important role since it will determine the number of applications, files, data, and other things that you can install on your computer.

Having enough storage space to install everything you need is key to enjoying a good user experience. Imagine, for a moment, how problematic it would be to have to work with a computer or a laptop that constantly runs out of space. And that forces you to delete things to free up some space to continue working. Annoying and chaotic, no doubt.

When buying a new computer to work, you must consider the type of unit it integrates. But also the storage capacity it offers. Today, the ideal is, in most cases, to opt for an SSD drive. The difference in performance compared to an HDD is so great that you can say that both play in different leagues, although it is true that hard drives still have the price per gigabyte ratio in their favor, which is cheaper.

The storage capacity that you are going to consider will depend on the work that you are going to do and the files, applications, and documents that you are going to use. You can also expand the storage unit or add a complementary one, but this entails an expense that you will want to postpone as long as possible after buying a new PC or laptop, and for this, you must choose your new equipment well.

How Much Data Do You Want to Save?

To determine how much storage a PC needs, consider how many files you want to back up and how big they are. Movies, Photos, and games use more storage than text files or music. I recommend opting for at least one terabyte of hard disk if you need to save a lot of movies, games, and other heavy files. Do you want to store text documents and occasionally photos? In this case, you need 512 gigabytes of storage. Lower storage capacity is only recommended if you back up a few files or work a lot in the cloud.

SSD or HDD

There are Hard Disk Drives and Solid State Drives for computers when it comes to storage devices. The plus point of Solid State Drives is that SSDs are ten times faster than HDDs, are quieter, and last longer. However, SSDs with large storage capacities are more costly than HDDs. Most laptops have an SSD drive or a combination of SSDs and HDDs.

ssd-hdd

Storage capacity: how much do I need?

If you are going to work making basic use of the equipment (office automation, documents, and light files), the minimum you should look for is a model that integrates a 128 GB SSD, although the ideal would be not to go below 256 GB.

128 GB is now the low standard for hard drives. Laptops intended for office automation will be perfectly satisfied with it, especially for those who also have an external hard drive. For a smartphone, however, 128 GB is a lot of storage. The phone can simultaneously accommodate around 3000 photos, five big games, and around thirty applications. On 128 GB, it is possible to store, for example, 30,000 songs in mp3!

256 GB is a good storage size for a daily used computer. On 256 GB, it is possible to store around 50,000 smartphone photos, 60,000 songs, 30 HD movies, or 15 Blu-ray movies.

If you use several applications, if you work with high-quality photos, and if you move medium-sized files, the ideal would be not to go below 512 GB, also in SSD format. For video editing and working with large files, you must start with at least 1 TB, although, in some specific cases, it is likely that you will have to exceed that figure. Investing in a laptop that has a 500 GB hard drive allows you to keep a lot of software and files. External SSD hard drives are often offered with this capacity. 25,000 HD photos (taken with a Reflex camera) can, for example, be stored on 500 GB.

High-capacity HDD units are an exciting option when you have very high storage needs and can also serve as a secondary unit (working together with an SSD).

1 TB corresponds to 1,000 GB: a great capacity, therefore! This large storage space is suitable for desktop computers and external hard drives that are used to store all of your data, often for several years. It will suit photo and video enthusiasts or those who have a large video library and need space. 1 TB can accommodate nearly 1,000 movies in 720p and 100,000 HD photos.

The storage space you need for gaming depends on how many games you play. Only play a handful of different games? In this case, 1 TB of storage is enough. If you often play a multitude of games, a minimum storage capacity of 2 TB is recommended. Also, keep in mind that many games are taking up more and more space these days. That’s why I recommend going large when it comes to storage space.

Storage for the whole family. With 5 TB, you’ll be comfortable for many years… No need to keep organizing and deleting files. The choice of this large storage capacity can be wise in the case of a shared computer (by the whole family, for example) or for an external 3.5” desktop hard drive, to be quiet. The most generous hard drives can reach up to 8 TB! But in this type of situation, it is more prudent to create partitions to secure the data.

Conclusion

If you just want to back up images and text documents, 512 gigabytes of the storage device is enough. Want to save several videos, games, and other huge applications on your computer? So choose at least one terabyte of storage device. This way, you can save for now without risking filling up your PC. And if what matters most to you is loading files very quickly from your PC, opt for an SSD instead of an HDD.

GPU fans not spinning is a frustrating experience, and the problem can arise for different reasons. As a result, there are several solutions to fix it, and while some are quick and easy, others can be a bit more complex.

All technology users have experienced device malfunction at some point during use, it is common, and it happens to almost everyone. But when you see the sudden stop of the devices, it is alarming.

The GPU in the computer is one of the prominent components that need special care to keep the functionality in sync. While cooling is a crucial factor for its proper functioning.

However, if you are concerned about how to fix a GPU fan that is not spinning or spinning periodically, the answer is mostly found in simple solutions. I’ve looked at the clever ways they’ll help you out. But before that, let’s see what causes quiescence in GPU fans.

Why are my GPU fans not spinning or getting slow?

Many GPU fans don’t spin unless they reach a certain temperature range. Therefore, the passive cooling system becomes the last parameter of assistance to help get the noise along. Also, if you don’t clean the fan properly, the accumulated dust becomes the reason for the GPU fans not spinning as they should.

Not needed

Many of the GPU fans feature the pre-designed passive cooling heatsink. So when you’re browsing or doing light tasks, passive cooling kicks in. So if you notice that your GPU fans are not spinning, it’s not a big deal to worry.

Reboot the system

Remember when you were pretty new to using your PC and getting stuck at some point, you just decided to “reboot” the computer? Well, pressing the reset button is still an answer to many questions and concerns in the world of computers.

If the GPU fans are not spinning, the simple solution is to restart the computer. It refreshes apps in the background, and thus things are very likely to work effectively even more.

PC connectors

If the GPU fans not spinning is a hardware problem, the solution is most likely in the hardware. For the graphics processing unit, the power should be smooth and jitter-free. The GPU requires more power to produce its best.

gpu-connect

So, to fix the GPU fan spinning wrong, please check the power connector whether they are connected securely or not. The 6-8 pin combo is what you normally have, and if it’s not connected properly, the fan is affected to spin.

The correct GPU located in the PCI-E slot is also an important factor. However, if the ports aren’t responding enough, shutting down the PC is something you can’t do anything about.

Lubrication

Using clogged machinery oil is not something only mechanics would use. If your GPU fans are not spinning and having trouble running, lubrication may be another solution.

When the fan bearings loosen or fade in the smooth spinning approach, the fan gets stuck, and that’s why you need to make the machinery work. It happens if your computer system is quite old. You can use the drops of any oil (besides cooking oils), such as sewing machine oil. All you have to do is:

  • Separate the sticker and remove the plastic case.
  • Drop drops of oil in a small amount onto the fan bearings. Make sure not to use too much oil. Or else you could end up dirtying the fan blades.

Remove Dust

If you make sure that the GPU fan is free of dirt and dust everywhere, you will also notice the efficient high-end output of the PC. Jam or malfunction may be caused by accumulated layers of dirt. So low spin means slow GPU fan movement.

dusty-gpu-fans

The GPU fans steadily interact with dust particles that end up inside the computer. In the long run, this garbage stays on the fan. The issue is especially common if you do not clean the computer in the long run. So, removing dust around these fans can increase their efficiency and make them run faster.

Get help from software.

There are many programs and tools that will help you solve the problem of GPU fans not spinning. If the methods mentioned above do not work, please get the best drivers from Nvidia or AMD online websites. Install the drivers, and if you already have them, reinstall them.

However, if you have installed a driver that has just been updated, or perhaps the installation process is inaccurate, the GPU fan rotation may be affected.

Take care of the limits.

It is so important to understand that running heavy software or games tells you the real performance of your system. It is crucial to know how much load it can support. If the GPU fans are not spinning, you can run a game or install the MSI Afterburner tool, checking the fan speed in RPM.

Test the GPU fan

There is not always a straight answer to something. If your GPU fan is not working, you should try all possible ways to fix the problem. Test GPU fan on another test PC is an option that will tell you if the problem is with your PC or if the GPU fan is faulty.

And if the GPU fan spins as it should, your actual system motherboard may be the actual cause of the poor GPU fan spin. Replacing the motherboard may fix the problem in that case.

Replace the fan

And finally, if none of the solutions are working and the GPU fans are not spinning, you can also decisively replace the damaged fan with an efficient one. Old GPU fans in the tool decrease its efficient approach to spinning.

Also, when cleaning, greasing, and software assist are not working, the GPU fans not spinning issue is most likely the relevant hardware. Mechanical malfunction is obvious when you use it regularly and without interruption.

However, it is true that sometimes the problem is not so big. So always start from internal functions and then check hardware etc.

Also, a pro tip to keep your computer system and GPU fan performing at their best is thorough cleaning sessions. Vacuuming and checking internal components is a must from time to time.

Final words

If your GPU fans aren’t spinning the right way, the best thing to do is to ensure everything is properly connected and clean before taking more serious steps. Sometimes, these fans catch dust and become jammed. So, this issue can be sorted with proper cleaning measurements. We have suggested a ton of methods. Hopefully, some of them will work for you. If you have anything else to ask, please drop your message in the below comment section!

If you have an Intel processor, you will most likely have an Intel Integrated graphics card like Intel HD Graphics 5000. Besides, AMD processor-powered computers will have AMD Radeon integrated graphics cards. On the other hand, you will see another GPU name from Nvidia or AMD if your computer has a dedicated graphics card. This way, you will be able to check the specifications of the GPU on the computer.

How to Check the Motherboard

You can say that the motherboard is the main component of a computer because you will add everything on the motherboard to run the computer. Besides, it is also important to check the specifications before upgrading as they might not be supported. So you might be thinking already that you have to open the computer or laptop back cover to check what type of motherboard or from which company your computer has.

But you can check motherboard specifications without opening the computer. There are different motherboard manufacturers like MSI, ASUS, and GigaByte. Besides them, you will also see HP, Dell, and other motherboards inside laptops.

To find out all the details of the motherboard of your computer-

MotherboardSystem-Information

In these two ways, you can check your computer’s RAM easily. Besides that, Task Manager will also show how many slots for RAM your computer has.

How to Check the Storage Type

At first, it might seem like storage is not that important, but your computer will not run faster until you pair the fast processor with a faster storage drive. Speaking of storage types, there are mainly two types of technology used right now, and the faster version is the Solid State Drive or SSD. Earlier, most computers arrived with Hard drives that had physical moving parts. But SSD is more like a bigger version of those small memory cards. Although still many computers come with hard drives, people also use them to store normal files. So to check what type of Storage drive you have-

Storage-typeTask-MAnager
Check Storage Type in Task Manager
  • Type Task Manager on the Windows search bar and search for it.
  • After opening the Task Manager, you will see some tabs on the top. So go to the Performance tab.
  • Then there will be a Disk section on the left side panel, and click on that.
  • Now look closely at the bottom right, and there will be the disk-type written. If it says SSD, that means you have a fast Solid State Drive. Other than that, it will show HDD, which is a Hard drive.

If you see more than one drive showing on the Task Manager, you have got more than one drive on your computer. In that case, you will need to check them individually by clicking on them. Besides this method, you can also check through the Device Manager. So search for it on the Windows Search bar and click on the Disk Drives drop-down option. You will see the storage drive, and the name will also be written.

How to Check Display Resolution

Without a display, it is impossible to use a computer. Laptops come with an inbuilt display, while you will have to buy an external display along with desktop computers. Although you will see the resolution on the display package, you might want to verify it. For that, you have to check after turning on the computer.

  • Inside that, you will see the Network section. So double-click on that again and then click on the Adapter option.
  • Now you will get all the adapter-related details.

Final Thoughts

Knowing the specifications are as important as doing things on the computer. If you don’t know about your computer, you are obviously lacking many things. Speaking of those things, specifications are important when installing a power-hungry program. If your computer does not have capable specifications, you will waste time installing that program. Besides that, everyone should research different specifications when going to buy a new desktop or laptop. Similarly, you have to know the specifications to set the best price while selling your computer.

You can go through all the above methods to check the specifications. But, many third-party programs can show all the specifications at once. You wouldn’t need to go through all the different menus by using them. Such programs are CPU-Z, Speccy, and HWInfo. These programs are specifically made to show computer specifications. So you can use them as well to check your computer. If you have any doubts or questions to ask, scroll down to the comment box, and we will surely get back to you as soon as possible.

The laptop is an effective alternative to the desktop PC. Lighter, portable, and less cumbersome than the latter. It nevertheless offers you the same possibilities of use. However, this computer hardware wears out over time. Its lifespan mainly depends on its components.

How long do gaming laptops last? Does your laptop feel slower while playing Black Ops IV and Apex Legends? Gaming equipment may produce progressively lower output and then restore it fully.

No matter how much money you spend, there will be obvious signs that it’s time to upgrade your laptop. Frames shrink, and internal components fail. For any potential buyer, the big question is, how long does a gaming laptop last? How to get the most out of your investment?

How Long Does a Gaming Laptop Last?

A gaming laptop will last 5-6 years without needing repair, while a standard laptop with a plastic casing will last 3-4 years. Parts can last half a decade, but the best-of-the-line components can’t offer the same value as visually complex games.

How Does The Lifespan Of Gaming Laptops Affect?

Construction efficiency is an integral part of the overall picture. That is why it is worth spending more to buy a better model when purchasing a game laptop.

You can save money by buying a cheaper model that doesn’t need to be replaced in a few years if you leave your system for at least five to six years.

Many unique parts can have a significant impact on the life of your product.

Equipment

Comparable to console games, where games are intended for the hardware configuration of a full generation of consoles (about six years old), PC games and laptop games cannot do so due to the wide range of hardware that can be connected to these computers.

A laptop is also smaller and lighter than a desktop computer. Manufacturers must modify their materials to do this. It would eventually result in slower desktop laptop components than their smaller counterparts. This distance is now reduced thanks to recent technological advances.

Hardware components can last up to 10 years if properly maintained and not overstressed.

GPUs

The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a crucial component of a gaming laptop. Before buying a laptop for your favorite games, it is important to compare the output of different GPU devices.

You’ll need a laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX660 or better if you’re looking forward to FIFA 22.

Google is your one-stop shop for technical information and comparison charts for any game you’re interested in.

graphics-card

To give you an idea, you will need to upgrade to a new graphics card, such as the NVIDIA RTX 3050, every 4-5 years.

The Nvidia RTX 3080 and RTX 3080Ti, which are high-end versions, are perfect for your lifetime (they’re real beasts).

RAM

Your choice of game will determine RAM requirements. Modern games require at least 8GB RAM, but 16GB of RAM is recommended for smooth gameplay. This component is less important than those mentioned above, which can impact the life expectancy of your gaming laptop.

ram

Low RAM capacity can also impact CPU and GPU processing. You may experience issues like device crashes, lags, and poor frame rates if you have a game that requires 8GB RAM and 4GB RAM.

screen

The screen is an essential component. It serves as an interface between the user and laptop. If this breaks, you will no longer receive the images, texts, and videos generated by the graphics card. The lifespan of a screen depends on the technology with which it is made. If the LCD screen can have a life expectancy of between 50,000 and 60,000 hours, OLED technology promises up to 100,000 hours. Thus, a screen remains usable between 6 and 10 years if it does not suffer a shock and is maintained correctly.

The hard drive

The internal hard drive is also a computer component that wears out over time. It all depends on the range of the product and its use. But, in general, its longevity is between 3 and 8 years.

How Long Does a Gaming Laptop Battery Last?

The average laptop battery life takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the frame rate and graphics card. High-end graphics cards last longer when used at high frame rates. A laptop battery doesn’t last forever. Its performance decreases over time. In general, a battery can withstand up to 3000 charge cycles, Which equates to about 2 or 3 years of use.

Gaming laptops are lightweight and portable. So batteries can play a significant role in your gaming experience. You also need to consider the type of game you play, such as strategy or first-person shooters. These games often have several AI features that will eventually require high processing and battery power.

Other points to consider

It’s not just the physical compounds that need to be considered when determining the lifespan of a laptop. Its performance, the arrival of new technologies, and viruses can make it obsolete. Thus, considering the maintenance of its components and market innovations, a gaming laptop has a lifespan of 5 to 6 years. At this deadline, the gaming laptop often becomes less fluid. And its operating system becomes less stable. It continues to work but no longer gives you the same pleasure as when it is new or little used.

Gaming Laptop Maintenance

Hardware can have a shorter lifespan if you don’t take care of it. Sometimes it can even be as low as five years. The accumulation of dust in the laptop could cause it to heat up and make it uncomfortable.

It is best to develop a cleansing routine every six months. You can’t just open your laptop and pull out every piece. Instead, you have to clean it individually. You don’t even have to open your gaming laptop to remove most of the dust: you can use compressed air.

Here is how you can do it step by step:

  • To see the fan vents on the rim, lay the laptop on its side. The laptop should not be placed on the table. Instead, you should put a box of compressed air upright to ensure that no liquid air escapes or causes damage.
  • When the dust starts blowing, hold the box close to the grate. You will see the scratches and dust from other grills.
  • To make sure your laptop is clean and dry, tilt it.
  • Repeat this process for each outlet.

Keep doing this until you start seeing large amounts of dust on your laptop.

Gaming Laptops Last Longer Than Regular Laptops.

Gaming laptops are more durable than regular laptops as they use high-end hardware such as CPU, RAM, and GPU to run modern games. They are also heat-treated, allowing regular use and maintenance for over five years. Standard laptop hardware configuration will be absolutely faster than laptop gaming.

Standard laptops can be configured for personal and official use and require minimal software and hardware configuration. You can expect lags and crashes if you play modern games, especially on standard laptops. Laptops with integrated graphics cards perform better than others.

Conclusion

You should expect at least five years of use from your gaming laptop if you take good care of it. Even if it can physically last more than 10 years, the material will be obsolete. That’s even though the laptop was expensive.

You can expect the GPU to achieve almost the same for the next two years if you’re performing well. To keep the frame rate you want, you will need to lower the settings.
