@HPCpodcast: With Hyperion Research on the Big Trends Across HPC-AI, Quantum, Cloud, Optical, Storage and Interconnects

For this episode of the @HPCpodcast, Shahin and Doug welcome three of the top analysts in the HPC, AI, cloud, and quantum, representing the industry analyst firm Hyperion Research.

Speaking with us are:

  •  Earl Joseph, Hyperion CEO with oversight for the firm’s overall research and consulting efforts along with their HPC User Forum, which conducts conferences in the US and around the world throughout the year
  • Mark Nossokof, Research Director and Lead Analyst for Storage and Interconnects and Cloud
  • Bob Sorensen, Senior VP of Research with focuses on exascale, supercomputing, quantum, and other future technologies.

The firm, the former IDC high performance computing market analyst group that became independent in 2017, is a stalwart of the HPC community. Its bi-annual market update breakfasts at SC and ISC are business and social musts — the crowd at their most recent event, at an Atlanta hotel at SC24, spilled out into the hallway.

We dive into numbers coming out Hyperion’s latest HPC-AI market update, including the strong current and projected industry CAGRs, the state of quantum computing (including Sorensen’s thoughts on recent negative comments about quantum from Jensen Huang and Mark Zuckerberg), trends in interconnects and storage as they relate to advanced computing and developments in optical I/O and optical computing. We also discuss the Trump Administration and its impact on federal government-backed computing and research.

We also look ahead through 2025 and the second half of this decade, identifying the three analysts’ key predictions in their areas of focus.
