"One of the most fun aspects of HPC engineering is that you get to solve a broad range of problems getting an application to run well and run at scale – sometimes to even run at all. There is always something new to learn and the feeling of finding a solution ...."

Summit Helps Forge Stronger Flights https://insidehpc.com/2024/05/summit-helps-forge-stronger-flights/ Wed, 15 May 2024 07:05:54 +0000 https://insidehpc.com/?p=94017

Simulations helping to cut through time and expense of certifying new materials by digitally customizing the ideal alloy Titanium alloys serve as cornerstone materials for the aerospace industry — stronger and lighter than steel, resistant to rust and corrosion and resilient past the melting points of most other metals. Companies such as RTX, formerly Raytheon Technologies, […]

The Arm-based Fugaku supercomputer, residing at the Riken Center for Computational Science in Japan, solidified the lead it seized in June atop the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. Announced today at virtual SC20, the 56th edition of the bi-annual list reflects a “flattening performance growth curve,” according to the organizations, which said […]

Where Have You Gone, IBM? https://insidehpc.com/2020/10/where-have-you-gone-ibm/ https://insidehpc.com/2020/10/where-have-you-gone-ibm/#comments Fri, 16 Oct 2020 03:55:32 +0000 https://insidehpc.com/?p=86000 The company that built the world’s nos. 2 and 3 most powerful supercomputers is to all appearances backing away from the supercomputer systems business. IBM, whose Summit and Sierra CORAL-1 systems set the global standard for pre-exascale supercomputing, failed to win any of the three exascale contracts, and since then IBM has seemingly withdrawn from the HPC systems field. This has been widely discussed within the HPC community for at least the last 18 months. In fact, an industry analyst told us that as long ago as the annual ISC Conference in Frankfurt four years ago, he was shocked when IBM told him the company was no longer interested in the HPC business per se....
